If you are one of the millions of people that search for hair loss cures or treatments every year, there is a good chance you are starting to see advertisements and information about scalp micro pigmentation or SMP. Scalp micro pigmentation is one of the newest and fastest growing segments in the hair loss cure industry. There are literally hundreds of new SMP clinics opening up across the country every year. In 2014 there were an estimated 85 micro pigmentation clinics/artists throughout the country. In 2018 that number is now estimated to be in the 500’s. With many of these businesses touting the benefits of their specific product and/or procedure, the decision on where to go to have your procedure performed can be somewhat intimidating and confusing. Regardless of where you decide to go, there are some important things that should always be looked at or considered.
Proper Training/Licensing for SMP
Because SMP is a relatively new procedure in the hair loss cure industry, it is not strictly regulated in a lot of states. In most states, all that is needed is a body art or tattoo artist card from the local health authority. While this is good news for potential new artists looking to get into the business, it can spell disaster for potential clients. Scalp micro pigmentation can take hundreds of hours of training to master and requires far more knowledge and practice that is needed to pass a local health dept exam. You should be very wary of SMP artists or clinics that cannot provide at least one certificate of training from a reputable trainer or program. Many artists are performing these procedures with little to no training at the peril of their clients. Ask your artist about their training and always ask to see recent work that they have performed.
Large Discrepancies in SMP Pricing
The prices for SMP procedures seem to be all over the place sometimes. As with any other service you should be wary of prices that seem either extremely high or extremely low. While all quotes for procedures are typically provided after a consultation with your artist, there are definitely some industry averages for most procedures. Whenever possible, you should go on multiple consultations to get an idea of what an average or fair price for your procedure is. Because this procedure is new to most people, there are some companies that are taking advantage of unknowing clients by price gouging or charging two to three times more than the industry average. If you do not have the option of going on multiple consultations, it is recommended to call or reach out to other SMP artists or clinics to get an idea of what their average price for your procedure is. While most of them will not quote you over the phone, many will be able to give you their average or ballpark cost for your procedure.
Be Comfortable With Your Scalp Micro Pigmentation Artist
If you do decide to undergo a scalp micro pigmentation procedure, you should always ask to meet your artist in advance. You will be spending a considerable amount of time in close proximity through multiple sessions with this person so they should be someone that you are comfortable with. Some clinics will have a salesperson sign you up for the procedure and an entirely different person or persons perform your procedure. Other artists will assist you through the entire process start to finish. Whichever route you choose to go, make sure you the person performing your procedure is someone you are both confident in and comfortable with.
While there are many things to consider when choosing an SMP artist, these are often the most important to consider. If you are still in doubt or have any questions, do not be afraid to reach out to an industry professional, even if they are not in your immediate area. Most successful and reputable artists or companies will be happy to assist you however they can over the phone.
